Father, help the people I surround myself with speak the truth into my life. Help me to hear and receive their words offered to me in love. Father, please also give me the wisdom to speak truth into their lives as well.

A community centered around Jesus, the church, is intended to be authentic. And with authenticity comes honesty—the easy kind and the hard kind.

The Bible tells us that as believers, we’re called to sharpen one another. Do you know what happens when you strike an iron flint against another? Sparks fly! It’s how you handle the aftermath that determines if you make a pile of molten ash or if you create a more refined product.

There will be days when you’ll speak truth to a friend, and there will be days when you’re on the receiving end of such truth—but that’s how God designed relationships to be. No matter which seat you find yourself in, God calls you to always humble yourself, to live authentically and honestly, in community, and to ultimately help each other journey toward Jesus. A true friend will be willing to tell you things that you don’t want to hear.

Don’t do life alone, dwelling in a fake community. Even when it hurts, a true community will lead you to life.

Prayer

Father, help the people I surround myself with speak the truth into my life. Help me to hear and receive their words offered to me in love. Father, please also give me the wisdom to speak truth into their lives as well.

Scripture References

9Now about your love for one another we do not need to write to you, for you yourselves have been taught by God to love each other.
26What then shall we say, brothers and sisters? When you come together, each of you has a hymn, or a word of instruction, a revelation, a tongue or an interpretation. Everything must be done so that the church may be built up.
16Is not the cup of thanksgiving for which we give thanks a participation in the blood of Christ? And is not the bread that we break a participation in the body of Christ?
17Because there is one loaf, we, who are many, are one body, for we all share the one loaf.
17As iron sharpens iron,

so one person sharpens another.

12Just as a body, though one, has many parts, but all its many parts form one body, so it is with Christ.
13For we were all baptized by one Spirit so as to form one body—whether Jews or Gentiles, slave or free—and we were all given the one Spirit to drink.
