What then shall we say, brothers and sisters? When you come together, each of you has a hymn, or a word of instruction, a revelation, a tongue or an interpretation. Everything must be done so that the church may be built up.

1 Corinthians 14:26

Paul’s letter to the Corinthians arrived at a time this young church was breaking apart. Aside from rampant sexual immorality, the church was being torn apart by factious leaders who were using their spiritual gifts for their own glory. Division was gnawing away at the fabric of the church. Not surprisingly, the church was ineffective in ministering to the broader city and advancing the gospel. But Paul’s call for the church was clear: “Everything must be done so that the church may be built up.”

Like the Corinthians, we also become ineffective when we use our gifts to amplify our own names instead of the name of Jesus. As God’s vehicle for His mission, we should strive for unity and love in Christ. God has given each of us gifts to help build His church. Let’s use our gifts to minister to our brothers and sisters. When we gather as believers, our gifts come together in harmony for the purposes of building each other up and advancing God’s kingdom.

Prayer

Thank You, Father, for the gifts You have given me. Help me elevate Your name above all else in my heart so I can use my gifts to unify and build up Your church.

Scripture References

9Now about your love for one another we do not need to write to you, for you yourselves have been taught by God to love each other.
26What then shall we say, brothers and sisters? When you come together, each of you has a hymn, or a word of instruction, a revelation, a tongue or an interpretation. Everything must be done so that the church may be built up.
16Is not the cup of thanksgiving for which we give thanks a participation in the blood of Christ? And is not the bread that we break a participation in the body of Christ?
17Because there is one loaf, we, who are many, are one body, for we all share the one loaf.
17As iron sharpens iron,

so one person sharpens another.

12Just as a body, though one, has many parts, but all its many parts form one body, so it is with Christ.
13For we were all baptized by one Spirit so as to form one body—whether Jews or Gentiles, slave or free—and we were all given the one Spirit to drink.
