Now about your love for one another we do not need to write to you, for you yourselves have been taught by God to love each other.

1 Thessalonians 4:9

How does God teach us to love? His very nature is wrapped up in holy, consuming love—revealed in His Son, Jesus Christ. In all His actions and words, Jesus, the perfect image of the Father, became the only tangible display of true love that the world has ever known. Completely God and yet completely man, Jesus taught humanity how to love perfectly— love with our hands, feet, mouths, and hearts.

Love is Jesus sitting with and talking to a prostitute and extending grace instead of judgment. Love is praying for your enemies and giving them food and drink. Love is leaving the ninety-nine sheep to pursue the one that is lost. And love is Jesus'  ultimate sacrifice of laying down His life for God's children.

Jesus Christ showed us the essence of love: a sinless man bearing the sins of the world so that humanity could be free, forgiven, and righteous.

Jesus is our perfect teacher and model. God asks us to be like Him: holy and full of love for one another. We are to bask in His love and learn about it so that we are driven to imitate Him.

Prayer

Jesus, thank You for teaching us how to love one another. Help me to grow in understanding and experiencing Your love, so that my life increasingly reflects Yours.

Scripture References

9Now about your love for one another we do not need to write to you, for you yourselves have been taught by God to love each other.
26What then shall we say, brothers and sisters? When you come together, each of you has a hymn, or a word of instruction, a revelation, a tongue or an interpretation. Everything must be done so that the church may be built up.
16Is not the cup of thanksgiving for which we give thanks a participation in the blood of Christ? And is not the bread that we break a participation in the body of Christ?
17Because there is one loaf, we, who are many, are one body, for we all share the one loaf.
17As iron sharpens iron,

so one person sharpens another.

12Just as a body, though one, has many parts, but all its many parts form one body, so it is with Christ.
13For we were all baptized by one Spirit so as to form one body—whether Jews or Gentiles, slave or free—and we were all given the one Spirit to drink.
