In 1936, Dale Carnegie wrote a self-help book entitled “How to Win Friends and Influence People,” and in the years to come, titles teaching us how to lead, to be an influence, to live in the rhythms of life with other people have taken bookshelves by storm.

But leadership isn’t just a topic. And influence is more than a skill.

Yet when you hear the phrase, “Go make disciples,” you might think, “Surely that is for someone else.”

Someone with more influence.

Someone who works at a church.

Someone who is extroverted, who is a leader, who has something more to say.

But what if that someone was you?

Today, we will dive into a crucial text of our faith and learn how to make disciples. Let’s get started!

Summary

Making disciples is not optional—it’s central to what it means to follow Jesus. Think about it: has anyone ever poured into your life spiritually? Maybe someone taught you how to pray, how to read the Bible, or simply pointed you back to God when you were drifting—that’s discipleship: someone investing in you so you could grow.

The word disciple literally means “learner” or “follower.” Not just in belief, but in practice. That’s what Jesus asked us to do in Matthew’s Gospel.

Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”

Matthew 28:18-20.

Look at that charge to us: “Go and make disciples of all nations…”

That command is better translated, “As you go, make disciples.” In other words, wherever you find yourself—in your office, in your classroom, in your neighborhood—you’re called to help others follow Jesus.

You don’t need a seminary degree or all of the answers—you only need to be a step or two ahead of someone else in the faith.

If you’ve learned how to pray, you can teach someone else.  If you’ve seen God’s faithfulness, you can share that story.

Someone poured into your life, and now it’s your turn to pour into someone else. And the good news? You aren’t doing this alone.

Here’s the beautiful part: when you invest in others, you’re not just changing their lives, you’re joining God in changing the world.

What's next?

  1. Who has invested in you and helped you grow in your faith?

  2. Who might God be putting in your life right now that you could invest in?

  3. What simple steps could you take this week to encourage someone in their walk with Jesus?
