What is your experience with grace?

Is it the bedrock of your faith? A gift you have freely received, but one you struggle to extend? Does it seem impossible for what you have walked through? Is it confusing to really understand?

Today, we look at the gift of grace and specifically learn what it means to freely give it away.

Summary

“When you woke up today, God gave you grace. Today God is giving you grace. Today God is being gracious. Now he's not forgetting about truths and consequences and reality and any of that. But he met you with grace when you woke up today. Now he may have told you the truth, but he met you with grace. He may be telling you the truth right now, but he met you with grace.”

Honestly, we should probably just pause there and say together, “praise God.”

Let the truth of grace settle on you today. We were created from dust, and in the sight of almighty God, we chose something other than our creator. We turned our backs on splendor, opting for swill, and what was God’s reaction? He put in place a plan by which we would be welcomed home to Heaven, choosing to place the wrath we deserved on His son, Jesus.

2 Corinthians 5:21 says it this way:

God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.

Does this mean that followers of Jesus can live out our days however we please? No, of course not!

Remember what the Apostle Paul wrote in Romans:

What shall we say, then? Shall we go on sinning so that grace may increase? By no means! We are those who have died to sin; how can we live in it any longer?

Romans 6:1-2

Remember what we’ve learned so far during our days together. Living the Christian life means conforming to be more and more Christlike and being truly in love with God. If those two things are becoming true of us, then our desires will shift away from the life we used to live and center on the life God has called us to.

This is an important principle for how we treat ourselves and those around us. When we grasp how much grace God has extended to us, we can properly assess how much grace we should extend to others.

As Louie said, “We should be the most gracious people… because we are the beneficiaries of the most amazing grace.” As people who have freely received grace, it’s now our joy to freely extend it.

What's next?

  1. Think about the grace you have been shown in your life. Recount at least three ways that the Father has shown you grace, where you received what you didn't deserve.

  2. Is there a person you need to extend grace to this week?

  3. How has God shown you grace today?

  4. Why does grace not give us permission to live however we want?

  5. According to Romans 6:1–2, how should grace change our relationship with sin?

  6. How can you daily remember the grace you’ve received from God?
