Yesterday, we took some time to ask, “Who am I?” and uncovered that what we might actually need is to ask a different question. Today, we are looking to a key passage of scripture to uncover that question.

Summary

Now when Jesus came into the district of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, “Who do people say that the Son of Man is?” And they said, “Some say John the Baptist, others say Elijah, and others Jeremiah or one of the prophets.” He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?” Simon Peter replied, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” And Jesus answered him, “Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jonah! For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my Father who is in heaven. And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it

Matthew 16:13-20

When Peter recognized who Jesus was, Jesus, in return, told Peter who he was. Take a moment to consider the weight of that exchange. In an instant, Peter knew who He was because He first recognized who Christ was.

Who is God to you?

For Peter, knowing who God is and what God said to be true not only changed everything about him but it gave him a mission to build the church. In knowing Him, we can know ourselves, and we can discover what He has called us to do.

You can think of it like this: Whatever is on the throne of your life will tell you who you are and what you are called to do.

What's Next?

Like Peter, Jesus wants to tell you who you really are. Take some time in the scriptures and ask, “Who does God say I am?”

  1. Who is God to you? List out some key attributes you have found God to be in your life.

  2. What is on the throne of your life right now?

Scripture References

13Moses said to God, “Suppose I go to the Israelites and say to them, ‘The God of your fathers has sent me to you,’ and they ask me, ‘What is his name?’ Then what shall I tell them?”
14God said to Moses, “
I am who I am
. This is what you are to say to the Israelites: ‘
I am
has sent me to you.’ ”
16Simon Peter answered, “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.”
32

But I tell you, do not resist an evil person. If anyone slaps you on the right cheek, turn to them the other cheek also.
40
And if anyone wants to sue you and take your shirt, hand over your coat as well.
12Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body so that you obey its evil desires.
13When Jesus came to the region of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples,
“Who do people say the Son of Man is?”
14They replied, “Some say John the Baptist; others say Elijah; and still others, Jeremiah or one of the prophets.”
15
“But what about you?”
he asked.
“Who do you say I am?”
16Simon Peter answered, “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.”
17Jesus replied,
“Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah, for this was not revealed to you by flesh and blood, but by my Father in heaven.
18
And I tell you that you are Peter,
and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades
will not overcome it.
19
I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven; whatever you bind on earth will be
bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be
loosed in heaven.”
20Then he ordered his disciples not to tell anyone that he was the Messiah.
