We are a self-obsessed people. We are not talking about any specific people group or community. We mean us: all of us. We are obsessed with who we are.

We find ourselves in an enneagram number, a Meyers-Briggs result, a social media comment, a well-meaning but poorly received comment. We are constantly on the lookout for what makes us, us.

But what if we've been looking to answer the wrong question? What if answering who God is will ultimately lead us to know who we are meant to be?

Over the course of the next four days, we are asking ourselves perhaps the biggest question there is: Who is God? Sadie Robertson Huff will lead us to discover how what He says about who he is informs who we are and how that changes everything.

Summary

If we were to ask, “How do you identify yourself?” How would you answer?

Maybe you would say your workplace or school, or your friend group or church. Or maybe you fall back on your interests, the hobbies that unite you with others. Or the thing about you that you wish you could change.  Or maybe if we pose that question, you would respond with holy confidence, proclaiming that you know who you are and who you are in Christ. Either way, our identity is no light work.

As we look at what defines us, we find that what makes us who we are is not what we do or where we go. Rather, what makes us who we are is who God is.

We don’t need more tests, more activity, more knowledge of self. We need something bigger. We need to ask a different question.

What's Next?

  1. How do you identify yourself? What are some key markers you would use to define who you are?

  2. Does what you know God says about you actually change how you view yourself? Why or why not?

Scripture References

11But Moses said to God, “Who am I that I should go to Pharaoh and bring the Israelites out of Egypt?”
12And God said, “I will be with you. And this will be the sign to you that it is I who have sent you: When you have brought the people out of Egypt, you will worship God on this mountain.”
13Moses said to God, “Suppose I go to the Israelites and say to them, ‘The God of your fathers has sent me to you,’ and they ask me, ‘What is his name?’ Then what shall I tell them?”
14God said to Moses, “
I am who I am
. This is what you are to say to the Israelites: ‘
I am
has sent me to you.’ ”
16Simon Peter answered, “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.”
32
Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”
38
“You have heard that it was said, ‘Eye for eye, and tooth for tooth.’
39
But I tell you, do not resist an evil person. If anyone slaps you on the right cheek, turn to them the other cheek also.
40
And if anyone wants to sue you and take your shirt, hand over your coat as well.
12Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body so that you obey its evil desires.
13When Jesus came to the region of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples,
“Who do people say the Son of Man is?”
14They replied, “Some say John the Baptist; others say Elijah; and still others, Jeremiah or one of the prophets.”
15
“But what about you?”
he asked.
“Who do you say I am?”
16Simon Peter answered, “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.”
17Jesus replied,
“Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah, for this was not revealed to you by flesh and blood, but by my Father in heaven.
18
And I tell you that you are Peter,
and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades
will not overcome it.
19
I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven; whatever you bind on earth will be
bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be
loosed in heaven.”
20Then he ordered his disciples not to tell anyone that he was the Messiah.
