Jesus is Surely Coming

Louie Giglio kicks off a collection of talks in the book of Revelation, All Consuming Fire. As we study Revelation 1, we see the main takeaway of this book written by John the Apostle: Jesus Christ is victorious and is surely coming.

Key Takeaway

The book of Revelation unveils the risen Christ and shows us what must soon come to pass.

This is perhaps the most critical letter you have ever received.

Read all of Revelation 1.

An angel was sent to the apostle John on the island of Patmos to deliver him a revelation. What he saw was unlike anything he had seen before. We are getting a glimpse of what’s happening in the throne room of the Almighty and in the end of the age.

The book of Revelation unveils the risen Christ and shows us what must soon come to pass.

When we read Revelation, it's important to note that the word "like" is used often. This is because John was describing something he had never seen or experienced and was trying his best to explain this revelation in language we could understand.

Verse 3 of Revelation reads, "Blessed is the one who reads aloud the words of this prophecy, and blessed are those who hear it and take to heart what is written in it, because the time is near."

We aren't doing a Bible study on the Revelation; we want the Revelation to study us.

The key verse of Revelation is verse 7.

“Look, he is coming with the clouds,”

and “every eye will see him,

even those who pierced him”;

and all peoples on earth “will mourn because of him.”

So shall it be! Amen.

It's not about when but who is coming.

John was believed to be 95/96 when he received this revelation, and Jesus died when John was in his mid-20s. It had been 60+ years, yet John was still showing up. He didn't give up on God because He saw him, and when he received this revelation and saw Him again (Revelation 1:7), the only thing he could think to do was lay prostrate.

There are two big ideas we want to focus on:

  1. Jesus is triumphant. Right now. Yesterday. Tomorrow. He has won even in a darkened world. There are many signs of the end, but He rises above all of them and is more brilliant than anything we have ever experienced (Revelation 1:12-16).
  2. Jesus is near and coming soon. Are you looking? I heard, I looked, I saw. Are you ready? Refined (Hebrews 12:25-29). Are you confident? It’s going to get darker before it gets lighter. Weeping may last. Will you stay faithful? “In the Spirit” today, tomorrow?

Father, open our eyes to see glimpses of the revelation of the risen Jesus.

"Don't you think in the darkness of the coming days that Jesus is any less brilliant than He is right now."

Prologue

1The revelation from Jesus Christ, which God gave him to show his servants what must soon take place. He made it known by sending his angel to his servant John, 2who testifies to everything he saw—that is, the word of God and the testimony of Jesus Christ. 3Blessed is the one who reads aloud the words of this prophecy, and blessed are those who hear it and take to heart what is written in it, because the time is near.

Greetings and Doxology

4John,

To the seven churches in the province of Asia:

Grace and peace to you from him who is, and who was, and who is to come, and from the seven spirits before his throne, 5and from Jesus Christ, who is the faithful witness, the firstborn from the dead, and the ruler of the kings of the earth.

To him who loves us and has freed us from our sins by his blood, 6and has made us to be a kingdom and priests to serve his God and Father—to him be glory and power for ever and ever! Amen.

7“Look, he is coming with the clouds,”

and “every eye will see him,

even those who pierced him”;

and all peoples on earth “will mourn because of him.”

So shall it be! Amen.

8“I am the Alpha and the Omega,” says the Lord God, “who is, and who was, and who is to come, the Almighty.”

John’s Vision of Christ

9I, John, your brother and companion in the suffering and kingdom and patient endurance that are ours in Jesus, was on the island of Patmos because of the word of God and the testimony of Jesus. 10On the Lord’s Day I was in the Spirit, and I heard behind me a loud voice like a trumpet, 11which said:

“Write on a scroll what you see and send it to the seven churches: to Ephesus, Smyrna, Pergamum, Thyatira, Sardis, Philadelphia and Laodicea.”

12I turned around to see the voice that was speaking to me. And when I turned I saw seven golden lampstands, 13and among the lampstands was someone like a son of man, dressed in a robe reaching down to his feet and with a golden sash around his chest. 14The hair on his head was white like wool, as white as snow, and his eyes were like blazing fire. 15His feet were like bronze glowing in a furnace, and his voice was like the sound of rushing waters. 16In his right hand he held seven stars, and coming out of his mouth was a sharp, double-edged sword. His face was like the sun shining in all its brilliance.

17When I saw him, I fell at his feet as though dead. Then he placed his right hand on me and said:

“Do not be afraid. I am the First and the Last.
18
I am the Living One; I was dead, and now look, I am alive for ever and ever! And I hold the keys of death and Hades.

19

“Write, therefore, what you have seen, what is now and what will take place later.
20
The mystery of the seven stars that you saw in my right hand and of the seven golden lampstands is this: The seven stars are the angels
of the seven churches, and the seven lampstands are the seven churches.

25See to it that you do not refuse him who speaks. If they did not escape when they refused him who warned them on earth, how much less will we, if we turn away from him who warns us from heaven?
26At that time his voice shook the earth, but now he has promised, “Once more I will shake not only the earth but also the heavens.”
27The words “once more” indicate the removing of what can be shaken—that is, created things—so that what cannot be shaken may remain.
28Therefore, since we are receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, let us be thankful, and so worship God acceptably with reverence and awe,
29for our “God is a consuming fire.”
