How, then, can they call on the one they have not believed in? And how can they believe in the one of whom they have not heard? And how can they hear without someone preaching to them? And how can anyone preach unless they are sent? As it is written: “How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news!”
Romans 10:11-15
In the year that King Uzziah died, I saw the Lord, high and exalted, seated on a throne; and the train of his robe filled the temple. Above him were seraphim, each with six wings: With two wings they covered their faces, with two they covered their feet, and with two they were flying. And they were calling to one another:
“Holy, holy, holy is the Lord Almighty;
the whole earth is full of his glory.”
At the sound of their voices the doorposts and thresholds shook and the temple was filled with smoke.
“Woe to me!” I cried. “I am ruined! For I am a man of unclean lips, and I live among a people of unclean lips, and my eyes have seen the King, the Lord Almighty.”
Then one of the seraphim flew to me with a live coal in his hand, which he had taken with tongs from the altar. With it he touched my mouth and said, “See, this has touched your lips; your guilt is taken away and your sin atoned for.”
Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, “Whom shall I send? And who will go for us?”
And I said, “Here am I. Send me!”
Isaiah 6:1-8
“You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.
Matthew 5:13-16
But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light. Once you were not a people, but now you are the people of God; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy.
Dear friends, I urge you, as foreigners and exiles, to abstain from sinful desires, which wage war against your soul. Live such good lives among the pagans that, though they accuse you of doing wrong, they may see your good deeds and glorify God on the day he visits us.
1 Peter 2:9-12
Do everything without grumbling or arguing, so that you may become blameless and pure, “children of God without fault in a warped and crooked generation.” Then you will shine among them like stars in the sky as you hold firmly to the word of life. And then I will be able to boast on the day of Christ that I did not run or labor in vain.
Philippians 2:12-16
You are the Light of the World.
Why?
Why does God call us into His story? Why does he appoint us as Christ's Ambassadors? Why does he send his helper, the Holy Spirit, to dwell within us and then call us to travel to the ends of the Earth as his witnesses?
For His Glory.
We who have been reconciled to God were so through Jesus Christ becoming sin on our behalf so that we could become righteousness. This transaction is the greatest act of love in history, and its story demands to be shared. God has chosen the very same reconciled sons and daughters to be the ones to do so. Our calling in life is to shine like a city on a hill so that as the world looks in our direction, they see, experience, and encounter Christ, ultimately turning towards Him in that same eternal reconciliation.
This is why we are commanded to live differently than those around us. It is the reason we work with excellence instead of excuses, it is why we go where the Spirit leads us, and it is why we pay close attention to our actions striving to live lives worthy of the Gospel. We do all of this so that as we shine, Christ gets the Glory. We ring our lives out on behalf of those around us so that they see His kindness and love. We respond to anger and pain with grace and compassion, so those who mock us will find themselves face to face with His mercy. We reflect his Glory into a dark world and, in doing so, call attention to the one who emanates the light.
In all that we do, we do it all for Jesus.
Prayer
God, cause my life to be an unmistakable source of grace and hope to those around me.
