Jan 4
There is so much joy to be had when we find freedom in Christ. Today, John Piper illustrates what happens when we embrace worldly suffering for eternal liberation.
Scripture References
1.Then I saw in the right hand of him who sat on the throne a scroll with writing on both sides and sealed with seven seals. 2.And I saw a mighty angel proclaiming in a loud voice, “Who is worthy to break the seals and open the scroll?” 3.But no one in heaven or on earth or under the earth could open the scroll or even look inside it. 4.I wept and wept because no one was found who was worthy to open the scroll or look inside. 5.Then one of the elders said to me, “Do not weep! See, the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, has triumphed. He is able to open the scroll and its seven seals.”6.Then I saw a Lamb, looking as if it had been slain, standing at the center of the throne, encircled by the four living creatures and the elders. The Lamb had seven horns and seven eyes, which are the seven spirits5:6 That is, the sevenfold Spirit of God sent out into all the earth. 7.He went and took the scroll from the right hand of him who sat on the throne. 8.And when he had taken it, the four living creatures and the twenty-four elders fell down before the Lamb. Each one had a harp and they were holding golden bowls full of incense, which are the prayers of God’s people. 9.And they sang a new song, saying:
“You are worthy to take the scroll
and to open its seals,
because you were slain,
and with your blood you purchased for God
persons from every tribe and language and people and nation.10.You have made them to be a kingdom and priests to serve our God,
and they will reign5:10 Some manuscripts they reign on the earth.”11.Then I looked and heard the voice of many angels, numbering thousands upon thousands, and ten thousand times ten thousand. They encircled the throne and the living creatures and the elders. 12.In a loud voice they were saying:
“Worthy is the Lamb, who was slain,
to receive power and wealth and wisdom and strength
and honor and glory and praise!”13.Then I heard every creature in heaven and on earth and under the earth and on the sea, and all that is in them, saying:
“To him who sits on the throne and to the Lamb
be praise and honor and glory and power,
for ever and ever!”14.The four living creatures said, “Amen,” and the elders fell down and worshiped.
32.Remember those earlier days after you had received the light, when you endured in a great conflict full of suffering. 33.Sometimes you were publicly exposed to insult and persecution; at other times you stood side by side with those who were so treated. 34.You suffered along with those in prison and joyfully accepted the confiscation of your property, because you knew that you yourselves had better and lasting possessions. 35.So do not throw away your confidence; it will be richly rewarded.
24.By faith Moses, when he had grown up, refused to be known as the son of Pharaoh’s daughter. 25.He chose to be mistreated along with the people of God rather than to enjoy the fleeting pleasures of sin. 26.He regarded disgrace for the sake of Christ as of greater value than the treasures of Egypt, because he was looking ahead to his reward.
1.Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, 2.fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.
5.and from Jesus Christ, who is the faithful witness, the firstborn from the dead, and the ruler of the kings of the earth.
To him who loves us and has freed us from our sins by his blood,
31.What, then, shall we say in response to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? 32.He who did not spare his own Son, but gave him up for us all—how will he not also, along with him, graciously give us all things? 33.Who will bring any charge against those whom God has chosen? It is God who justifies. 34.Who then is the one who condemns? No one. Christ Jesus who died—more than that, who was raised to life—is at the right hand of God and is also interceding for us. 35.Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall trouble or hardship or persecution or famine or nakedness or danger or sword? 36.As it is written:
“For your sake we face death all day long;
we are considered as sheep to be slaughtered.”8:36 Psalm 44:2237.No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. 38.For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons,8:38 Or nor heavenly rulers neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, 39.neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
