1.Now the whole world had one language and a common speech. 2.As people moved eastward,11:2 Or from the east; or in the east they found a plain in Shinar11:2 That is, Babylonia and settled there.3.They said to each other, “Come, let’s make bricks and bake them thoroughly.” They used brick instead of stone, and tar for mortar. 4.Then they said, “Come, let us build ourselves a city, with a tower that reaches to the heavens, so that we may make a name for ourselves; otherwise we will be scattered over the face of the whole earth.”5.But the Lord came down to see the city and the tower the people were building. 6.The Lord said, “If as one people speaking the same language they have begun to do this, then nothing they plan to do will be impossible for them. 7.Come, let us go down and confuse their language so they will not understand each other.”8.So the Lord scattered them from there over all the earth, and they stopped building the city. 9.That is why it was called Babel11:9 That is, Babylon; Babel sounds like the Hebrew for confused.—because there the Lord confused the language of the whole world. From there the Lord scattered them over the face of the whole earth.
17.Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows.
9.And this is my prayer: that your love may abound more and more in knowledge and depth of insight, 10.so that you may be able to discern what is best and may be pure and blameless for the day of Christ, 11.filled with the fruit of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ—to the glory and praise of God.
22.Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says.
10.Jacob left Beersheba and set out for Harran. 11.When he reached a certain place, he stopped for the night because the sun had set. Taking one of the stones there, he put it under his head and lay down to sleep. 12.He had a dream in which he saw a stairway resting on the earth, with its top reaching to heaven, and the angels of God were ascending and descending on it. 13.There above it28:13 Or There beside him stood the Lord, and he said: “I am the Lord, the God of your father Abraham and the God of Isaac. I will give you and your descendants the land on which you are lying. 14.Your descendants will be like the dust of the earth, and you will spread out to the west and to the east, to the north and to the south. All peoples on earth will be blessed through you and your offspring.28:14 Or will use your name and the name of your offspring in blessings (see 48:20) 15.I am with you and will watch over you wherever you go, and I will bring you back to this land. I will not leave you until I have done what I have promised you.”16.When Jacob awoke from his sleep, he thought, “Surely the Lord is in this place, and I was not aware of it.” 17.He was afraid and said, “How awesome is this place! This is none other than the house of God; this is the gate of heaven.”18.Early the next morning Jacob took the stone he had placed under his head and set it up as a pillar and poured oil on top of it. 19.He called that place Bethel,28:19 Bethel means house of God. though the city used to be called Luz.20.Then Jacob made a vow, saying, “If God will be with me and will watch over me on this journey I am taking and will give me food to eat and clothes to wear 21.so that I return safely to my father’s household, then the Lord28:20,21 Or Since God… father’s household, the Lord will be my God 22.and28:21,22 Or household, and the Lord will be my God, 22 then this stone that I have set up as a pillar will be God’s house, and of all that you give me I will give you a tenth.”
1.Again Jesus began to teach by the lake. The crowd that gathered around him was so large that he got into a boat and sat in it out on the lake, while all the people were along the shore at the water’s edge. 2.He taught them many things by parables, and in his teaching said: 3.“Listen! A farmer went out to sow his seed. 4.As he was scattering the seed, some fell along the path, and the birds came and ate it up. 5.Some fell on rocky places, where it did not have much soil. It sprang up quickly, because the soil was shallow. 6.But when the sun came up, the plants were scorched, and they withered because they had no root. 7.Other seed fell among thorns, which grew up and choked the plants, so that they did not bear grain. 8.Still other seed fell on good soil. It came up, grew and produced a crop, some multiplying thirty, some sixty, some a hundred times.”9.Then Jesus said, “Whoever has ears to hear, let them hear.”
16.So I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. 17.For the flesh desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the flesh. They are in conflict with each other, so that you are not to do whatever5:17 Or you do not do what you want. 18.But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law.19.The acts of the flesh are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery; 20.idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions 21.and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like. I warn you, as I did before, that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God.22.But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23.gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law. 24.Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. 25.Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit. 26.Let us not become conceited, provoking and envying each other.
