Key Takeaway
You don't have to allow fear to rule your life and have a say in your life. You can learn to quiet the world around you and hear what God is saying to you.
What is it in your life that has the loudest voice? Here's the truth: you get to decide what message gets amplified in your life.
But how do you silence the voice of fear?
Fear projects us into scenarios that aren’t even reality yet. It keeps us up at night, steals our peace of mind, erodes our faith, and can take a toll on us emotionally and physically. It’s not as simple as saying, “If I had more faith, I wouldn’t be dominated by fear.”
Start by reading 1 Kings 18. Here’s the context:
King Ahab was a wicked ruler over Israel. He married Jezebel, a woman from an ungodly people, and began worshiping false gods—Baal being the most prominent. Jezebel could not tolerate the One True God, so she sought to kill all His prophets.
God told Elijah, a prophet, to confront Ahab. This led to the showdown on Mount Carmel: 850 prophets of Baal and Asherah went against Elijah. The story is incredible, but to spoil the ending for you: fire came from Heaven, consuming the sacrifice, altar, and water. The false prophets fled in fear, and Elijah executed judgment on them.
It was here that God demonstrated His power and faithfulness. But the story doesn't end there.
Look at 1 Kings 19:1-3 -
"Now Ahab told Jezebel everything Elijah had done and how he had killed all the prophets with the sword. So Jezebel sent a messenger to Elijah to say, “May the gods deal with me, be it ever so severely, if by this time tomorrow I do not make your life like that of one of them.” Elijah was afraid and ran for his life."
You may not be literally running for your life, but you may relate to the fear all the same.
Fear causes us to:
Forget what God has done. Elijah had just witnessed God’s power, but fear made him forget.
Forecast terrible outcomes. Elijah imagined the worst when he heard Jezebel’s threat.
Flee. He ran for his life.
Fold. He shut down and withdrew from his mission.
Fear often comes from the enemy seeking to remove us from the story God has for us.
But take a look at what happens in the rest of the story:
1 Kings 19:5-8: An angel provided food and water for Elijah, strengthening him for a 40-day journey to Mount Horeb.
1 Kings 19:9-14: Elijah entered a cave, and God asked, “What are you doing?” Elijah, still operating out of fear, explained his situation. God instructed him to step outside, where He passed by, not in wind, earthquake, or fire, but in a gentle whisper.
1 Kings 19:14-16: God asked again what Elijah was doing and then gave him a renewed mission, reaffirming the anointing on his life. God “took the mic” back from Jezebel, amplifying His truth in Elijah’s heart.
So how do we amplify what is good and true in our lives?
Train your spiritual ear to God’s whisper. Proverbs 4:20-23 reminds us to choose who’s on the mic. Your greatest currency is your attention, what are you paying attention to?
Retrace your steps. Return to places where you’ve seen God work.
Anchor your heart in truth.
Proactively engage with your assignment. Leaning into what God has called you to do pushes fear aside.
When we choose to listen to God’s whisper, retrace His faithfulness, stand firm in His truth, and step boldly into our assignment, fear loses its power and God’s purpose for our lives takes the lead.
