Christ and Your Career

How does a relationship with Christ impact your career?

As we continue through 1 Thessalonians, Ben Stuart hones in on some of Paul’s practical implications for our faith and how they play out in everyday life. If we are meant to love the Lord and love our neighbors, what does it look like within the context of our jobs?

Key Takeaway

Pick a career, pursue it for the glory of Christ, and represent Christ well through hard working and serving others.

  1. As we are adopted into sonship, we embrace a new family of brothers and sisters in Christ.
  2. Do not be a disruptive force to the community and create needless drama. A lot of people have an aversion to Christ because they're adverse to His people.
  3. Pick a career and pursue it for the glory of Christ. Find your passion and pursue a higher purpose within it. Our work should represent Christ well.
  4. Motivated by love, do something productive for the common good. We should pursue our passion with love instead of chasing comfort or prestige.
  5. Work hard with your hands, and be productive to win the respect of outsiders, and you will win the right to be heard.
"Find how God wired you, see what you're passionate about, and pursue your passion for a higher purpose."

Discussion Questions

  1. We can answer the question of 'what' we do, but can we answer the 'why'?
  2. How can you respond to the drama taking place in the workplace?
  3. Do you know people who don't go to church because of the people? How can we rewrite that narrative?
  4. How do you feel about your current career?
  5. What are you chasing in your job?
  6. How can you take small steps to serve others and show them the love of Christ rather than just preaching about it?

Scripture References

9Now about your love for one another we do not need to write to you, for you yourselves have been taught by God to love each other.
10And in fact, you do love all of God’s family throughout Macedonia. Yet we urge you, brothers and sisters, to do so more and more,
11and to make it your ambition to lead a quiet life: You should mind your own business and work with your hands, just as we told you,
12so that your daily life may win the respect of outsiders and so that you will not be dependent on anybody.
