Key Takeaway
God is calling you more than just attending church and consuming what you want out of it. It's time to mature and commit to being a part of the family so you can fully experience all that God has for you within His Church.
Christianity is not a solo event. We've always been created to be in a family. The two major concepts of faith are that God is a perfect Father and that He has put His sons and daughters into families in the body, the Church.
The enemy wants to destroy the idea of fatherhood so that one of the major prongs of our faith will be diminished in people's appreciation and understanding. The enemy tries to assail the concept of family so that people don't want anything to do with family and therefore he undermines the confidence of what God has created for us. God wants to restore fatherhood and family through the Church.
Houses are designed to have people in them. It's a place where we can love and serve. Our house is like base camp, but our home is in Heaven. It's a place to rest and refuel so we can move out to rescue and restore. Jesus is building His house, the Church. Matthew 16:18 says even Hell will not take out the Church. Jesus is the Master Builder. The glory of God resides in the Church and in the Builder.
You can't do it alone. Ephesians 3:14-21 is saying we'll never know the height and depth of the love of God without the family that is derived from His name. The benediction in verse 20 reveals that God can do whatever you need Him to do in your life. He can do immeasurably more than we can ask or imagine according to His power that is at work in us. Do you hear the theme of family? We individually place our faith in Jesus, but when we do that, we enter into the "we" of the family of God, the Church.
God does want to build us, but He builds us best by building us together. Ephesians 2:19-22 explains why we can't go through life alone. You need church and church needs you.
We are sons and daughters if we have put our faith in Jesus, which means we are brothers and sisters, which means we're family.
Church is not an organization you join but a family to which you belong. It's not a club. It's why we reference Passion City Church as the house. We are a family. We want anyone who walks in to feel like you're home and welcome with us. In a global sense, we want you to feel like you're home with God, not a sterile, cliquish, exclusive community, but a house filled with hope, laughter, and reality. We want it to be a place where you know you are valued, cared for, encouraged, challenged and sent out into the world. We get to pick the culture of our house and our words shape culture.
Our church has many rooms, but there is only one house. An individual room isn't its own house. We have Students in the loading dock, bloom, Passion Kids, Community Groups, Access, and many more rooms, but we're all part of one house. Roomism divides families and teams. We-ism unites and strengthens. At Passion City Church we believe We>Me.
Church is not an event you attend, it's a house you live in and serve, Attending something undermines what God is building. Attending tends to be about you while the house is about we. What you're doing by providing options and convenience is diluting maturity and roots. You can't just hop in and out of churches all the time. It requires commitment.
We gather to worship and scatter to serve. We're trying to break down consumerism and lift up ownership. Jesus is the lead and only story at Passion City Church. He ignites in us a desire to join Him in serving His Church. It is the way of Jesus to become a servant.
At Passion City Church, volunteers are called Door Holders. They are kind people who want you to experience what they already have. They know how good Jesus is and want others to know Him as well. Volunteers sign up and show up under duress or bribes. Door Holders pull their weight, take ownership, and give their best.
Jesus is building His Church and He's calling you to be a part. Step up, touch your city, care for your family, and serve with love. You don't get any rewards for attending Church, in Heaven you get rewards when you build His Church.
