Many of us feel enormous pressure to be a “good Christians” and to share Jesus with others. But sometimes we need to take a step back and realize that God hasn’t abandoned us to fulfill this mission alone; He has equipped us through the Holy Spirit.

Note the phrase “Holy Spirit comes on you.” Naturally, nothing inside us moves us to share the gospel, but the power of Jesus inside of us compels us to share. What a powerful thing to realize that the pressure is not on us to do, but we are instead called to surrender to the Holy Spirit—and He’ll help us out!

With the gift of the Holy Spirit comes the promise that God will call us outside of our comfort zones. Jesus declares that we will be His witnesses in Jerusalem (for His audience, their homes) and in Samaria (a foreign place for His followers). But remember: He calls us not out of our own strength, but out of His strength. That takes the pressure off us—what freedom!

Prayer

Lord, what a gift You have given me: Your Holy Spirit! Whenever I feel incapable or afraid, help me remember that You are my strength.

Scripture References

7For the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power, love and self-discipline.
8So do not be ashamed of the testimony about our Lord or of me his prisoner. Rather, join with me in suffering for the gospel, by the power of God.
3For what I received I passed on to you as of first importance: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures,
4that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures,
5and that he appeared to Cephas, and then to the Twelve.
8
But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”
34Then Peter began to speak: “I now realize how true it is that God does not show favoritism
35but accepts from every nation the one who fears him and does what is right.
5But you, keep your head in all situations, endure hardship, do the work of an evangelist, discharge all the duties of your ministry.
6For I am already being poured out like a drink offering, and the time for my departure is near.
7I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.
