Devotional
If I were to ask you what you are grateful for, what quickly comes to mind? Maybe you would name some people in your life. Or your job, your home, your health. But how often do you practice gratitude for God’s faithfulness and His mercy?
It’s no secret that you’ll face trials and difficult circumstances. You might be facing some today.
But no matter what you’re facing, you can shift how you approach your days. If you take on the attitude of Jesus, you quickly begin to see opportunities for gratitude instead of grumbling. You can say, “I am in Christ, and Christ is in me. I am a brand-new creation. Christ is the victor, and I am walking in all the victory Jesus has won for me.”
Your new mindset reminds you that God is faithful. You begin to practice gratitude for God’s goodness toward you. Your circumstances don’t get the final word. True to His promise, God already gave you the victory. So rejoice! Thank Him for His faithfulness and commit to practicing gratitude today.
Prayer
Let my heart say a hundred times today, Thanks be to God! Over and over again, let gratitude move my spirit toward victory.
This is how God showed his love among us: He sent his one and only Son into the world that we might live through him.
1 John 4:9
Devotional
Maybe you’re wearing glasses or contacts to help make the words you’re reading right now legible. Most people can’t see everything perfectly, and the same is true for our study of the cosmos. In order to see the vastness of the universe clearly, we invented telescopes to help us see what’s all around us.
While man-made telescopes are spectacular, have you ever thought about the greatest telescope that God gave to His people—the Word of God? The whole Bible zooms in on one central scene—the cross. On this cross hung not just one of us but God Himself in human flesh. His name? Jesus. He chose to come to earth, embodying God’s indelible proclamation: I love you. His incomprehensible death provided a covering for our fallenness, His resurrection life bridging the way back to the arms of our Maker.
When you look through this telescope, you can see the wonder of the cross clearly, and your heart can’t help but feel awe and gratitude for His glorious grace that saved you.
Prayer
God, give me eyes to see Jesus' work on the cross as the epicenter of history so that I may find new life through Him.
Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.
Devotional
As we come to life in Jesus, we are invited to become radically generous people. We aren’t called to simply give away our leftovers-the few unallocated dollars in the budget or the clothes we’ve outgrown.
Instead, we are called to give our firstfruits. To bring forth our best and give it sacrificially, to the extent that it will actually seem foolish to the world. Why?
Because Jesus modeled that kind of generosity. He set the example, and who are we not to follow in the footsteps of our Savior?
Gratitude is the wellspring of generosity. When you receive the grace of Jesus and acknowledge you did nothing to earn His love, the only response you can have is thankfulness that turns into worship.
Pray that God would release the grip you have on your possessions. Ask Him to remind you of His grace, given so freely. The more time you spend with Him in His Word and in prayer, the more grateful you will become.
Prayer
God, help me to see Your salvation as the foundation of my gratitude. Thank You for Your generous joy, peace, and hope that overflow in my heart.
what is mankind that you are mindful of them,
human beings that you care for them?
Psalm 8:4
Devotional
Imagine the shepherd David out in the fields at night, tending his flock by starlight. Though he’s gazed on these stars a thousand times, this evening is different. He’s hit with a powerful and life-changing thought: “What is man that You are mindful of him … that You visit him?”
This is the biggest question of all time, isn’t it?
Why would God be mindful of us? David was looking up into the immensity of God’s creation, yet he still knew he had a relationship with the One who made it all-the sun, the moon, the stars, and the heavens. He was blown away by God’s indirect answer.
All this, yet the God of the universe knows his name. And He knows your name too. He cares for you and loves you and invites you into His family.
Amid the beauty of this world, God cherishes you above it all.
The psalm then talks about how God has crowned mankind with “glory and honor” (v. 5). When you feel low or lonely, think back to those words, take a look at nature’s expanse, and breathe in God’s affection for you.
Prayer
Holy God, You love me immensely and intimately. I have no other response but gratitude for Your magnificent love toward me.
I will consider all your works
and meditate on all your mighty deeds.”
Your ways, God, are holy.
What god is as great as our God?
Psalm 77:12-13
Devotional
Why is it important that we come together and worship shoulder to shoulder with other Christ followers?
Wouldn’t it be enough to worship God in our own personal and private ways?
Yes, worship begins with an intimate relationship between you and God. It must start from a place of awe and wonder at what God has done for you and in you. But worship is never truly finished until what has been placed in us—joy, gratitude, celebration-moves through us to fellow believers and those who don’t yet know Jesus as their Savior.
When we gather as believers, collective hope rises.
Our trust is strengthened as our faith is anthemed.
This is where the weary get lifted, the fearful get emboldened, and the downcast get rejuvenated. This is the power of a worship gathering, and all it takes to unlock it is for you and other believers to show up with open hearts. Make gathering together a priority, and watch what God does.
Prayer
Lord, point me back to my first love, a pure devotion to You rooted in a holy awe at Your salvation power and work.
Let everything that has breath praise the Lord.
Praise the Lord.
Psalm 150:6
Devotional
Worship is not just a genre on the radio or the songs we sing in church. While that can certainly be an expression of worship, at its core, worship is a life-style, one of deep and revelatory gratitude.
Worship is a lifestyle.
When you get this view of worship in mind, it becomes a game-changing reality for your relationship with God. No longer do you have to worry about how well you sing or how musically talented you are.
God isn’t looking for your creative prowess. He simply wants you to direct your thoughts and emotions toward Him. He wants your affection. Your desires. Your voice. He wants your heart and all that really matters to you.
Embrace a lifestyle of worship today, and as you experience a little bit of heaven here on earth, watch how it changes you. Worship sharpens our sight, putting everything into perspective. It can transform mundane moments into extraordinary opportunities for joy. You were created with His wonder pulsing through you. Let your life be an expression of it.
Prayer
God, I'm done confining my worship to Sunday mornings. I worship You here and now, with all that I have.
give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.
1 Thessalonians 5:18
Devotional
It’s easy to practice gratitude when things are going our way. When we get the job or cross the milestone or win the competition. But unfortunately, life doesn’t always consist of those mountaintop moments.
There are far more times when your gratitude will be tested by the barrage of trivialities and inconveniences of everyday life.
If that’s you and you’re struggling with gratitude, the encouragement is simple but effective: pray. Pray continually. When you spend time directing your thoughts toward God, you realize that gratitude is a response first and foremost to God’s continual love.
It’s about gaining the right perspective on your life, a humble human before a loving Lord. With this lowly posture, you’ll more quickly move past annoyances and find your way back to rejoicing.
Pray today for a mind that has been captured by God’s brilliant love. Ask Him to replace callousness and cynicism with awe and wonder in your heart, and watch how gratitude permeates your every breath.
Prayer
God, break through my barriers that keep me from gratitude, and elevate my eyes, that ! would give thanks to You always.
